Crankbaits

Crankbaits are great all purpose, all season lures. They come in many different sizes, actions, and colors for different seasons. Time of year dictates the best starting crankbait to use and the best retrieve action.

Choose a deep diving crankbait with no wobble for pre-spawn bass. Work the transition areas leading into spawning flats. Fish will be slow and lethargic, match your retrieve to the action of the bass.

Pick a deeper diving crankbait with a wide wobble for post spawn. Retrieve it slowly over and around spawning flats, points, and weedlines. Big bass will be roaming these areas and coving a lot of water with a crankbait can be dynamite. Mid summer, pick your best weedlines or rock piles and use same crankbaits. If watercolor is clear, switch to a no wobble crankbait and speed up the retrieve.

Fall time is best to go shallow. Pick a shallow running crankbait and work it around the best shore structure.Reeds, pads, docks, and shallow rocks are awesome areas to fish. Let the fish dictate the speed, but typically the slower the better.

When picking colors, pick a color that best matches the natural forage on the lake. Perch, trout, shad, are some of the standard colors. Keep your colors simple. Manufactures have all the various colors to catch the angler, not the fish. Pick colors that best match the hatch.
